I am a former Field Staff of Wingate Wilderness Therapy. I worked at Wingate for only one year, but during this time I got to witness many positive transformations by the kids, and experience them for myself as well. Throughout the time at Wingate we were taught to work with the kids as healers, not fixers. Such as, when a bone is broken, it is not the doctor’s purpose to fix the bone themselves.. But his or her purpose is to align it back, and create the most positive environment for it to heal on its own. We practiced this as field staff.. To allow the kids a place of little resistance.. A place where it would be hopeful for them to heal with time and extra guidance. After working at Wingate, I have realized that it seems healing can be a life long process.. But Wingate had the perfect tools for many to begin and continue their healing journey. I’m sure of this because I was, unknowingly, one as well..
